Why the plan?

The coastal reserves protect important natural and cultural values while catering for a wide range of recreation activities. The Otway Coast Committee recognised the need to develop a plan to continue to provide for recreation while protecting the values that people appreciate.

The Victorian Coastal Strategy, the key document guiding coastal management in Victoria, identifies the need to plan carefully for all parts of the coast. The Strategy provides a clear framework for this new plan.

Preparing the plan

Community input on issues and opportunities was obtained through a series of meetings and discussions in late 2010 and 2011.

A wide range of existing plans and strategies were reviewed, issues discussed on-site, and goals and possible future actions developed.

Project team

The plan was prepared by planning consultants Robin Crocker and Lindsay Fraser, working closely with the Otway Coast Committee, DSE and the Colac 0tway Shire.

Future directions

The coastal reserves managed by the Committee will continue to provide an inspiring and memorable setting for people living on or visiting the Otway coast, complementing the adjacent Great Otway National Park.

The draft plan strikes a balance between protecting values and providing for ongoing recreation. The plan identifies broad future principles and directions for management, and sets out a series of goals and actions.
