26th Sep. 2013 - Rabbit Baiting
As reported in last week's News Sheet the OCC had recently completed a rabbit baiting program. On the day of publication we received a report from Colac Otway Shire of one dead and one disorientated bird being discovered near the Apollo Bay Harbour.
At the same time, as many readers will have noticed, a letter to the editor detailed the same report.
The OCC has conducted four similar programs to date over the last 6 years with no reported 'off target' consequences.
The OCC views the implications of the report seriously and consequently will not undertake any further programs until such time that they can be completed with greater confidence that there will be no 'off target' consequences.
We have discussed the report with the contractor employed to carry out the program, and been informed that as per normal practice dead rabbits were collected each morning.
As we do not have the dead bird concerned we cannot confirm the reason for its demise.
As previously reported when dead birds are found on the foreshore the OCC will respond to those reports asap, and collect the carcass for further inspection if warranted.
